Nitous oxide was first produced by the english chemist and Presbyterian minister Joseph priestly, in 1772 and further investigated by Humphrey davy in 1800 at the Pneumatic medical institution in Bristol. Davy recorded that breathing the gas helped to relieve toothache-from which he was suffering at the time.Pain relieving properties were not explored for another 50 years.
Nitrous oxide is a non flammable compound of nitrogen and oxygen. At room temperature it is a gas, but is easily liquefied and stored under pressure. At temperatures above 575 degrees F it breaks down into seperate molecules.
In a petrol engine when nitrous oxide is introduced a proportional amount of fuel must be added to prevent leaning of the mixture.Gains of 50-100 bhp are obtainable ,evan more if the engine is built to withstand it.
In a Turbo diesel there is no air throttle it is free to take in as much air as it can draw if you modify the fueling ( remap) you simply need to add nitrous this will mix with the extra fuel to give more power. In fact the turbo diesel is easier to add nitrous to than a petrol engine.
